Madrid Travel Guide

"De Madrid al cielo, y en el cielo, un agujerito para verlo"

Madrid, Spain

After London, we visited Madrid.  No trip to Spain is complete without visiting Madrid.  We spent 5 days in which we did a little bit of every thing.  We visited the museums, went to a flamenco show, enjoyed a soccer game, shopped at Salamanca district and of course we ate and drank a lot.

Located in the heart of Spain, Madrid is a vibrant city with beautiful architecture, captivating history and a mix of old and modern Spain.

There are many attractions and sights that are located pretty close to each other.  Walking around is the best way to enjoy and explore the city.  Our days in Madrid felt like a break and as is said "when in Rome do as the romans" we took naps in the middle of the afternoon and had late dinners.

This are favorites in Madrid:
The classics
In my opinion, this are the most emblematic and iconic sites in the city: Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Puerta de Alcalá, Catedral de Almudena, Retiro Park and Palacio Real.   Places full of history and must seen attractions of the city.

The museums
Madrid has 3 top museums: Prado Museum, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza.   They are very different in terms of art but for sure one of them will fits your taste.  You can see the European masters like Velazquez, Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Rembrant and also a big collection of modern art.

The Food
It seems that food is always a centric part of our trips.  Spain has a rich food culture.  It's an awesome place to travel if you are a foodie or just enjoy to try something different.   Madrid has a lot of variety of places that can accommodate any budget and taste.

I highly recommend to go for tapas.  Grab a beer  or "caña" at a bar while you enjoy your free tapa and repeat.  Don't miss the opportunity to try jamón serrano de bellota, croquetas (A favorite since I am a kid), churros, patatas bravas, huevos rotos or tortilla de patata.   You can find it all under one roof at Mercado San Miguel.  This historic market is perfect to sample the Spanish cuisine.
